and away we go: mexico vacation day 1

well we're home from vacation.  coming home is always bittersweet.  it's nice to be back in your own bed ... but it's never really fun to get back to reality.  we've been gone since last thursday, so it will take me a little bit of time to get all caught up.

thursday was a travel day for us.  the day started super early -- especially since i failed to pack until the very last minute and ended up packing late wednesday night/early thursday morning.  travis and i loaded up our car, and then headed around the block to pick up nick and kate.

kate had to take calls at the first two airports and the morning seemed a little hectic.  in chicago we ran into josh schwede -- he's one of the guys who works for hirevue.  kate and i have both worked with josh because both of our companies use their video interviewing tool.  erin was traveling out of chicago as well -- i first met erin in chicago last fall at taleo world.  we all had a good laugh about running into each other and spent a little bit of time catching up.  we even ended up being on the same flight on back-to-back rows of a huge airplane.  not sure how that happened, but i love happy chances like that.

on the second plane, i felt something dripping on my head and looked up to find this.  it didn't seem like it was in the right spot to be condensation from the air conditioner, but it was raining outside, and i didn't want to freak myself out too badly.  i shared the picture with nick {told him not to tell kate for fear of a meltdown} and made myself laugh about it because travis seemed to think all was cool.

we sat back and enjoyed the ride.  neither of the flights were too bad, but i was so excited when i looked out my window and saw this:

our vacation was literally within sight!  once we landed we had an hour and a half ride to the resort.  nick had arranged our transportation ahead of time.  we didn't realize it was so far out, and people kept saying, "oh -- who picked your vacation?" to the point that we were beginning to get nervous, as if we had made a bad choice.  finally i asked our driver why people kept saying that.  he said our resort was actually one of the nicer resorts -- whew.  it was just the drive out to it that was a little long.

we stayed at the gran bahia principe tulum; it was pretty impressive pulling up to it, but none of us snagged any pictures.  we got all checked in, sucked down our complimentary margaritas and hoped on the golf cart trolley to get to our little condos.

we got our bags into the room and then set out to explore the resort by way of the beach.  kate and i wanted to see the water, so we opted not to follow the brick pathways and just walked along the beach.

this is one of my favorite pictures from the entire trip.

we didn't explore for long because everyone was ready for dinner.  we grabbed dinner at the main buffet and were surprised to find that it was better than cruise ship food.  i assumed since it was all inclusive, it would be more like the food found on a ship, but it wasn't bad at all.  there was an incredible variety, too.

after dinner the guys went back to the rooms.  travis was pretty worn out -- it was a full-day in his book.  it was the most consecutive hours he's been up in quite some time.  kate and i weren't ready to settle in, so we grabbed a drink at one of the cabana bars.  it was pretty hot and humid, so we moved out to the pool and put our feet in the water.  it was so good catching up with her.  our schedules keep us so busy these days -- and aside from driving 'round and 'round our neighborhood the other night when she was really stressed about a project at work, it has really been quite some time since we've had dedicated time together.

while we were talking, it started to sprinkle.  we laughed it off and thought it was kind of refreshing.  then the skies really opened up.  we decided to make a run for it.  by the time we got back to our rooms, we were 100% dripping wet.  when i walked in, travis sat up long enough to see that i was drenched and then he was out again.

it wasn't until the next morning that i saw the huge blue and white umbrella sitting by the front door.
