sunday morning rain is falling: mexico vacation day 4.

on sunday morning we woke up to rain. we thought it would be a passing shower like we often get in florida, so we grabbed the umbrellas and headed off to breakfast dressed for the beach.  after breakfast we stopped into the gift shop and purchased a floppy hat for me.  while everyone else had burned the day before, i had only burned on the top of my head.  travis didn't want it to get really bad, so i grabbed a big floppy hat.  i also grabbed a cute beach bag to carry all of things in since i had forgotten to pack one.

after breakfast and shopping it was still raining, so we headed to the cabana bar and decided to play spades. we ended up hanging out here for several hours because the rain just kept coming down.

kate and i entered the ping pong tournament ... and i was terrible!  we spent the rest of the afternoon listening to karaoke participants and playing spades.  because everyone was trapped inside, people kept stepping just outside the door to smoke.  the only thing about the cabana is that it was primarily open-air.  it had glass windows and doors all the way around it, but they were always left open to let the breeze blow in. this, of course, meant cigarette smoke kept blowing in right by our table, and there was really no where to go to avoid it.  kate got up once and closed the door.  the man at a table next to us with his wife and children applauded kate, and told her he would buy her a drink if they weren't already on the house.  a little later nick got up and closed the door.  then a while later, the dad who had applauded kate, got up and closed the door.  sometime later, i got up to close the door and a lady came out of her seat at me -- of course, at the one person who hates confrontation the most.

"they are allowed to smoke out there."

"of course they are.  i'm not asking them to stop smoking; i'm just closing the door."

"well, i want the door open."

"the smoke is coming in through the door."

"that smoke isn't bothering your table"

...

insert hair on the back of nick's neck standing on end.

"i want the door open; i can't breathe."

i was shaking at the end of the exchange.  nick raised his voice, the lady got out of her chair to ensure i didn't close the door, and no other allies were around.  the man with the children had left and his wife wasn't piping up.  travis had gone to the restroom {which was probably a good thing as he doesn't take to people talking to me unkindly}.  so, i left the door open.

we continued to play spades for a bit longer, but there was a bit of a damper on the rest of the afternoon, and it wasn't just from the rain.  i refused to leave before that lady, so we waited her out.  once she and her husband left, we headed out to the beach.  it was still incredibly overcast, but we wanted to make the most of the break in the weather.

kate and i went out into the ocean and had a lot of fun ... but ended up with a few angry guys when they couldn't find us on the beach.  we were having fun giggling in the ocean and climbing on the slippery breakers.

once the guys knew where we were and were no longer worried, they joined us for a little bit. travis wasn't able to be in the water for very long -- even just standing.  the waves were just too much for his stomach.  we played in the water a little longer and then moved up to the pool because it was much too cold and was starting to rain again.

we hung out under the grass huts next to the pool, but i wasn't in a very good mood.  i was sad the boys had gotten so upset {and in all honesty were still a little upset with us}.  travis and i rarely disagree so to be doing it on vacation was miserable. nick and kate met some people who worked for an oil company in canada, so they stayed to chat with them for a while; and travis and i headed back to the room.  we were fine as soon as we got away and agreed that neither person intended to upset the other.  we took a short nap and then started getting ready for dinner.

we had dinner reservations at el pescado -- the seafood restaurant at the resort.  i snapped this picture before heading out of the room and then the four of us got several really good pictures all together.

dinner was ... weird.  it wasn't what any of us expected it to be, but it was still fun to be in a different environment. we heard a funny noise and looked up to find two little lizards talking and chasing one another.

after dinner we headed back to the patio seating we'd found on one of our first nights at the resort.  we had fun listening to music and enjoying our time all together.
